Promoting Technological Innovation for
the Decarbonization of Industrial Thermal Systems

The core mission of DITS is to orchestrate and to carry out the development of cutting-edge industrial furnaces. DITS is also promoting the social implementation and wide spread adaption of these technologies in the society.

Message From The President

Many catastrophic natural disasters have striked our society in recent years, which are strongly responsible for global warming. Reduction of carbon dioxide is the big issue in our society to prevent global warming. The heating processes in the industries consume the huge energy and emit huge amount of carbon dioxide with about 150 million tons, which is about 13.5 % of Japan’s total annual CO₂ emission. The furnaces are mainly used in the industrial heating processes.
Two types of furnaces, the combustion furnaces and the electric furnaces, are used in the industrial heating process. In order to reduce the carbon dioxide emitting from the furnaces, the electric furnaces should reduce the energy consumption, and the combustion furnaces should use the fuels, such as hydrogen and ammonia, which do not contain the carbon compounds. However, hydrogen and ammonia have not been used as fuels in the furnaces. The consortium named “Decarbonized Industrial Thermo-System Center (DITS)” was founded for getting the way how to use these decarbonized fuels in the industrial furnaces and for developing the electric furnaces with higher efficiency. The members of DITS are 19 industries, 12 universities, and one national R&D institute.
DITS has been funded by NEDO for METI project named “Decarbonization of Thermal Processes in the Industrial Manufacturing Systems” from 2023. This project is planned to be continued by 2031. DITS is driving this project for realizing the decarbonized society.
